Throughout the month of August, gugak (Korean music) performers gather every Thursday night to perform at the Joseon-era palace for a special month-long program titled Deoksugung Pungnyu.

Those who want to escape the summer heat should go and check this out.

After two rounds on August 1 and 8, the rest of the series will continue to lure nighttime visitors to fun and cool traditional performances on August 15.

The upcoming August 15 show titled “When Tradition Meets Modernity” will feature zither-like geomungo player Lee Jae-ha, Choi Na-ri, well known for her court dance, and pansori singer Kim Pyeong-seok who will stage a new form of traditional performance with a modern twist.

On Thursday, August 22, a feast of pusal (a genre of shamanic dance and music) and Taepyeongmu (a Korean dance wishing peace for the country) will be presented, along with an exciting performance by the percussion group Tago.

Especially, this show will offer a chance for spectators to take on more than a mere observer role, jumping onto the stage to dance and sing with performers.

Next-generation gugak performers who have swept various gugak competitions will come together for the last show on August 29. They will shower audiences with cool songs performed on seven-stringed instrument ajaeng, daegeum (bamboo transverse flute), and sogo (small hand-held drums).

“This August series will be followed by plenty of traditional gugak shows in September as well which one can enjoy surrounded by the night view of the palace”, said director Lee Sang-hwon of the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation (CHF) which hosts Deoksugung Pungnyu.

Deoksugung Pungnyu will continue for one hour every Thursday at 7:30 pm at the palace throughout August.
